If you’re reading this article, I’m going to assume that you’re into horse training and are looking for some really killer tips to turn out the best pony, Canadian cutter or whatever that you’re trying to train. Weel, these tips should come in handy, regardless of the breed of horse that you have in your stable (or field). One of the most important things in training horse is to use kindness in all your work. Punishment is not the best way to go about teaching any horse to do anything. Kindness and reward based training programs produce the best results as well as making life a lot more pleasant for both you and your horse.
First of all, and let me get this out of the way so that there is no misunderstanding, there is no ONE technique for training a horse that is correct. You need to learn a variety of techniques if you’re going to be successful at this. You need to learn how to incorporate different schools of thought along with your own personal preferences and skills. This in itself may be the best tip that anybody gives you so you don’t go wasting your time on trying to do something you’re not cut out to do. Consult with someone who is able to show you how to do the things that you are not confident (or competent) in doing.
Another tip, and a lot of people will disagree with this, but so be it. Create a bond with your horse. There are lots of techniques out there that are pretty cold and calculated. Breeders swear by them. And I’m not saying that they don’t work. But I feel that your best shot at success with training your horse is to use a technique that creates a bond between you and the animal. I’m not saying you have to marry the old gray mare, but be kind to it. You’ll get a lot farther this way. This is something that is very popular these days, as horses are begining to be seen less as 'workhorses' and more of a family pet. There are very few real horse lovers who use dubious methods to train their horses nowadays.
Finally, and you can take this to the bank, you can’t fool a horse. Did you ever see that episode of MASH where Radar found the horse and Hawkeye told him to just pretend you’re taking him to the bunk house and the horse didn’t buy it? BJ said, “He knows you’re not taking him to the bunk house.” You cannot, no matter how hard you try, fool a horse. how many times ahve you gone into the stable with mints in your pocket and he knows in an instant what they are and which pocket they're in! You can stand on your head and whistle Dixie. That horse will know you’re up to something. Be straight with your animal and he or she will respond to you.
In my signature, you’ll find a review of a great resource that will, really have you training your horse correctly in no time at all.
